Introduction The theme of this book, “perceptual organization”, asks how sensory inputs are organized into an integrated, structured percept.

    The core of our method is a new formal model of one type of perceptual structure, based on classical machine vision techniques for analyzing an image at multiple resolutions. The model takes as input an arbitrary grayscale image and returns a lattice structure describing the visual organization of the image. Vision scientist James Elder, professor of psychology and electrical engineering and computer science at York University, is a member of York’s Vision: Science to Applications (VISTA) program. His multi-disciplinary team is working to better understand human vision and perception in order to train more intelligent artificial vision systems.
